Decoding the muzzle puzzle: All you need to know before putting a muzzle on your dog
Recently, a wave of panic swept through Chennai’s pet-loving community after rumours of a new regulation mandating muzzles for all dogs in public spaces surfaced. Even though the Greater Chennai Corporation has clarified that no official muzzle rule has yet been issued, an official order pertaining to muzzling certain dog breeds in certain locations may soon be expected. Here’s all you need to know about muzzling your dog...
DOES YOUR DOG NEED A MUZZLE AT ALL?
Animal behaviourists emphasise that muzzling should never be a one-size-fits-all approach, says Meera Subramanian, an animal rights activist. “Muzzles are not meant to punish a dog or indicate it’s dangerous. They are a preventive measure, for breeds that exhibit strong reactive behaviour in crowded places,” she explains.
“Not all dog breeds are ferocious, some breeds are very friendly. For them, it might even seem like a punishment if they suddenly introduced to muzzles so the process has to be slow,” says actress and pet owner, Masoom Shankar.
Making sure muzzles are put right:
“One must be properly educated before putting a muzzle on their dog and closely notice how they are reacting to the muzzle,” says actress Parvati Nair. Shankar M, a canine behavioural expert, lists out how to put a muzzle correctly :
 Ensure proper fit: The muzzle should fit snugly but allow the dog to pant, drink water, and breathe comfortably.
Choose the right type: Basket muzzles are ideal for longer durations, while soft muzzles are for short-term use, and are not ideal for hot weather.
Check for comfort: Regularly monitor your dog to ensure the muzzle isn’t causing discomfort.
Test before use: Let your dog wear the muzzle at home for short periods before venturing out to ensure comfort.
Things to keep in mind while putting muzzle on your dog:
Muzzling a dog is not as simple as putting it on and stepping out. It’s a process that requires preparation and patience, says a practising veterinary doctor, Kavitha Menon, and explains the ‘FAP rule’.
Familiarisation: Introduce the muzzle to your dog slowly. Let them sniff it, wear it for short periods, and reward them with treats.
Avoid overuse: Overusing muzzles can worsen behavioural issues and create stress.
Public etiquette: Being a responsible pet parent includes assessing your dog’s behaviour and the environment. If in doubt, err on the side of caution.
Possible complications if used improperly:
Injury: A poorly fitted muzzle can cause chafing around the snout.
Stress: If introduced abruptly, a muzzle can heighten a dog’s anxiety levels.
Miscommunication: Dogs communicate using body language, and a muzzle can hinder their ability to express themselves
